Year 3’s Bignor Experience

By Year 3…

On Thursday 19th March Year 3 went to Bignor Roman Villa. The first activity was dressing up as Romans. It was so cold we kept our coats on. We were slaves, soldiers or rich land owners. Hugo was the villa owner and George was the Emperor! We all looked realistic and felt like real Romans. Next we all went into the mini museum where there was a model of how the villa would have looked in ancient times. Next we admired the amazing mosaics on the floors- the outdoor dining room had a picture of Jupiter and Ganymede the shepherd. We were then shown what was left of the 70m corridor. The best thing was the hypocaust, underfloor heating. The slaves had to work hard to keep the furnace going. After lunch we had some Roman activities – spinning, writing with a stylus and grinding corn to make real flour. It was a really good day and we all learned loads.
