Reception

Children are in the Reception class from age 4 to 5 years. It is the final year of the Early Years Foundation Stage, but it is also the first year of ‘proper’ school. To reflect this, our Reception classroom is situated in the main school grounds alongside the Year 1 classroom. The Reception classroom has two dedicated outside areas allowing the children to continue to develop and grow through the principals of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Reception maintains their strong links with the Nursery and Pre-Reception classes but also forge new links with the Year 1 class to support the transition between the different parts of the school.

The class teacher and teaching assistant provide an imaginative and engaging curriculum based on well-planned play led opportunities and stimulating adult-led activities. We encourage outdoor exploration, nature-based activities and exercise as part of our day. This allows the children to become creative and critical thinkers with a positive attitude to learning, the confidence to make the best of their abilities and to lay down firm foundations for their academic development.

Not only do the Reception children have their dedicated areas, they also regularly access and use all of the main school facilities. They receive specialist teaching in Sport, Dance, Music and French. In addition, Reception children benefit from weekly swimming lessons at the local leisure centre.

By the end of the Reception year, the children are fully prepared to make their exciting transition to Year 1 and to continue their journey within the Lyndhurst family.
