Writer's Workshop

Years 4 – 6 were very lucky to have Sam and Nicky from Explore Learning introducing them to their Writers’Award Competition. The most exciting thing about the competition is the fact that the first prize is a four day break for two adults and two children to Disneyland Paris, including travel and accommodation!

For the past ten years, Explore Learning has been inspiring children to write, from the young authors in the making to those a little more reluctant.

This year, they are giving children a ‘Chance to change the world’ with their imagination by writing a 500-word story! How would you change the world?

This year Alesha Dixon is the official judge of the Explore Learning Writers’ Awards!

Alesha has written two very popular children’s books – Lightning Girl (launched in April 2018) and Lightning Girl 2: Superhero Squad. Another award is Alesha coming to visit the winner’s school.

To enter the competition, the children need to write a story of no more than 500 words about changing the world. This could be the invention of time – travel, the discovery of a life – changing medicine or something a bit different and crazy like turning a factory pollution into candy floss!

With Sam and Nicky, the children rolled the picture dice to choose a theme for their stories and then rolled a question dice to discuss questions and use their answers to plan their stories. The questions were:

Why does something need to change?

How can we change this?

Who can make a change?

How do you feel about the current situation?

It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to share ideas and get some inspiration for their stories. Each Upper School child will bring their competition booklet home so their parents can sign the consent form for their children’s story to be entered. We will work on the stories in class but the parents will be able to see them before they are entered.

Fingers crossed that someone from our school will write an outstanding story and win the trip to Paris! Good luck!
